Far Eastern Art
Far Eastern Art:
Far Eastern Art encompasses the rich, diverse artistic traditions of East Asia- primarily China, Japan and Korea. It is often characterized by a profound connection to nature, spiritual philosophy and technical skill. Key forms include calligraphic ink painting, ceramics (celadon, porcelain), lacquerware and sculpture -- deeply influenced by Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
Key Elements and Characteristics:
1. Calligraphy and Painting:
Ink-charged brushwork is central, emphasizing subtle, vigorous expression over realism with subjects often reflecting the natural world.
2. Ceramics and Porcelain:
Highly prized, ranging from Neolithic earthenware to sophisticated Celadon and glazed enamelware.
3. Sculpture:
Dominated by religion, particularly by Buddhism- figures in bronze, wood and stone.
4. Decorative Art:
Includes intricate jade carvings, silk textiles, lacquerware and in Japan distinct woodblock prints and folding screens.
Regional Highlights:
China:
known for ancient bronzes, landscape painting and mastery of ceramics.
Japan:
Famous for Ukiyo e woodblock prints, folding screens and minimalistic aesthetics.
Korea:
Renowned for distinctive Celadon pottery and elegant, almost minimal forms.
It is worth noting that Chinese Painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as "guo' Hua'nor traditional Chinese. This means "national painting or "native Painting". Traditional Painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments. Oils are not used. It is done on paper and silk.

Flowers are symbols of Life and Growth
Shells symbolize birth, purity and fertility
Skulls symbolize the Certainty of Mortality
Candles symbolize the Passing of Time
Mirrors symbolize the Soul in Reflection
Insects symbolize Transformation and Decay
Musical Instruments symbolize Beauty and Transience
Dead Animals symbolize Contradiction and Hunt
Silver, Gold and Gemstones symbolize Luxury
Genre Painting
In order to capture certain events in our lives paintings play a major role. When Happy moments are immortalized in such a way, it helps to cheer one up when he is in the doldrums.
Naive Art
Majority of Naive artists are aware of "fine Art" conventions such as graphical perspective (an artistic technique used to create the illusion of three-dimensional depth and space on a flat surface) and compositional conventions, but are unable to fully use them or choose not to.
Naive Art is simple, unaffected and unsophisticated- usually specifically refers to art made by artists who have had no formal training in an art school or academy. The most famous Naive artist of modern times is Henri Rousseau. His Painting--"Bouquet of Flowers" is displayed in the Tate Gallery. "Voyage to Labrador" is a painting by another famous Naive artist--Alfred Wallis. Ge'rard Laplau and Andre'Bauchant are also included among Naive artists.
Portraits
