The most deep-rooted malaise of our society is apathy.

Generally speaking in this competitive world of ours the most precious commodity seems to be time. We just do not seem to organize ourselves enough to contribute to the upliftment of our society. Or to put in another way the betterment of society is the least of our priorities.

Inspite of our good intentions we keep deferring it until such time till we are well settled---then until such time when we have settled our children e.t.c. Because whenever an individual is confronted with this issue he will never own up that he is not willing to spare time for social work. Most people feel that his immediate family should be his main priority which in actual effect happens to be his only priority!

If our eduacational institutes can drum into the young minds that doing social work is just as important as taking care of your family then

most god-fearing individuals would plan their week-ends in such a way that at least 5 or 6 hours could be allocated to community service.

This does not only mean that we must do voluntary work in a hospital or help the disabled. Any voluntary work that is beneficial to our society & which helps in resolving contentious issues within our society should be encouraged.

At present only members of our NGO's seem to be endowed with enough empathy to devote time, money, energy towards a worthy cause

such as the environmental society etc. In fact every individual can contribute to the betterment of our society depending upon his area of expertise.

Artists e.g. by painting cities that are highly polluted or the rapidly increasing  deforested-areas can bring about awareness.

If some of the scientists had not started ringing alarm bells, then the global conferences for environmental control & discussion about renewable energy sources would not be gaining momentum.

But as earlier mentioned not enough is being done by the developed countries which are the biggest contributors to global warming & damage to our eco-system. In their race to 'MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES' causes a thick blanket of smog to engulf entire cities. If timely action is not taken then it is soon likely to block the sunlight that we have become so accustomed to. Therefore, what else

would you call the unwillingness of these governments to take timely action in the face of this glaring reality but 'apathy'.
