Quest
It is human nature to better our lives & in this endeavor we obviously try & emulate those that have made progress faster than ourselves.
However, while emulating the people in the developed countries one must assess one's own resources, capabilities & circumstances. We cannot emulate them in everything, otherwise there is a risk of losing one's own identity. This is very often noticed in the new generation who develop an inferiority complex when they go for higher studies in the western world because they think that it is because of the way of their
lives that they are lagging behind.
They must be made to realise that it is not the way of our lives that is entirely to be blamed. Under-development in the third world countries is chiefly due to the lack of visionary leaders. E.g the Indian subcontinent was one of the most affluent parts of the world in the 17th & 18th centuries but it was reduced to slavery
because the rulers of that time did not foresee the importance of developing the naval power or upgrading the ammunition that was used by their army & also because of the hegemonistic desire of the British to rule the world which they did by unscrupulously using the corrupt among the people in power .
Our way of life was hardly to be blamed for our lack of progress.
In most third world countries if emphasis is laid on education & judiciary we can easily compete with the developed countries without giving up our values in terms of our religion & social framework.
We must make our youngsters understand that the west inspite of having made great strides in science & technology still envy us for our high moral standards. Their promiscuous society is a source of great concern & they would do anything in their power to reverse this tide.
As the saying goes if you become very broad-minded, you will soon become flat-headed. The gay marriages that they are legalizing are
condemned not only in the Quran but also in the Bible because they could rip the fabric that holds our society together.
Therefore, in seeking higher education our youth should not give up our values just so that they look like one of them & not stick-out like a sore thumb. Ever since the dawn of Islam Our prophet has encouraged us to acquire knowledge even if we have to go to a foreign country like China!
