History & art
This universe was created long before the creation of man. But except for God nothing whether big or small is immortal. Only God who is the originator will be there eternally. The world as Shakespeare said is a stage, we all come into this world-- play our roles and leave.
Thus, whether it is our past, present or future they are but various parentheses in eternity.
Nevertheless, our creation has a purpose, therefore it is imperative that we keep a record of our past generations. Only if we learn from their experiences that we can make progress because nobody has the time to make all the mistakes himself!
Earliest records of History date only from 5000B.C. Therefore, had it not been for the primitive cave paintings found in Altamira in modern day Spain Etc. we would not have known anything regarding the way of life of the people of the period before 10,000B.C. The subject matter of the cave paintings is animals drawn by some pigment on limestone rock. This corresponds to the Paleolithic period or the old stone age when people survived basically by hunting animals.
When besides hunting , farming was taken up as an alternative to hunting in the Mesolithic age around 10,000 B.C. and as far as art is concerned human figures 10-12 inches high were drawn for the first time.
Neolithic period around B.C. 7000 followed which is generally associated with stock-breeding & the
cultivation of wheat & barley. This age also witnessed the building of houses using wood & earth. In terms of architecture the Catal Hayuk near Konya (Turkey)is considered one of the world's oldest human settlement & so are the houses in Jericho. Pottery was also introduced in the
Bronze Age which followed the Stone Age. It seems Mesopotamia is the first cradle of our civilisation. Man tends to settle near the banks of rivers which provided him with the basic necessities of clean drinking water, food & transportation--thus Mesopotamia lying between the rivers Tigris & Euphrates was the most ideal place for him. In this era the urban population increased so it became possible to maintain a proper record of the historical events that occurred & so the Role of Art was then relegated to supplementing this information . However, the importance of art in any form whether it be painting, computer graphics or sculpture etc will never be diminished because a thing of beauty is a joy for ever!
